This show was based on the English comic novel ‘The Diary of a Nobody’, by George and Weedon Grossmith that first appeared in the magazine Punch in 1888.
It is the fictitious diary of Mr Charles Pooter, a middle aged city clerk of lower middle-class status but significant social aspirations. The humour derives from Pooter's unconscious gaffes and self-importance.
The musical ‘Oh Mr Pooter!’ was written by 2 academics from the University of Kent and first performed at the Gulbenkian Theatre in the summer of 1971. We were delighted to have Martin Handley (Radio 3) as musical director and the professional singer, Barry Clarke to lead the cast.
